What this is

A fact to be told and then rehearsed: Keep what’s before the cut, and add 0.1 only if it rounds up. It is the third step of rounding to one decimal place. Students have already cut the number after the first decimal place and decided whether it rounds up; this rule says what to write next.

The routine

  • Explain. Say the whole rule. Students repeat it.
  • Frame. Say the first half. Students give the second half. Press Reveal to check.
  • Reframe. The rule is turned around. Say the half on screen. Students give the other half.
  • Rehearse. Nothing on screen. Students give the whole rule.

Run it out loud first (individuals, then the whole class), then again on mini-whiteboards. You choose each time whether students say it or write it; the screen is the same either way. Reveal turns into Hide, so you can put the blank back and ask someone else.

Why it can simply be told

Every idea in the rule is already secure or is plain English: “what’s before the cut” comes from Cut after the first decimal place; “rounds up” comes from Does it round up?; “add 0.1” is written down, not worked out.
