Rich tasks
Activities to help you think mathematically

My rich tasks
I have collected my favourite rich tasks in an accessible, easy-to-use format.

Standards Units
The “Improving Learning in Mathematics” (or Standards Units) resources are, in my opinion, some of the finest ever produced. They are rich, challenging, well thought-out and well resourced. In short, I love them.
Arithmagons
Aritmagons are a powerful activity structure, requiring students to work forwards and backwards.
Build an Army
“Build an Army” is a fun strategy game that can help consolidate understanding of key mathematical concepts. After students have played the game and described their strategy, there are opportunities for differentiation via various lines of inquiry and probing questions for the students to investigate.

Something in Common
These activities allow consolidation of key skills, prevent students from copying each other (as all the questions are different), make marking and assessing easy for the teacher (as all the answers are the same!), and provide a lovely extra challenge for students as they try to figure out exactly what is going on!
CIMT
Each unit contains a bundle of brilliant resources, jam-packed with examples, notes, and practice materials. The “Activities” sections are particularly useful for preparing students for the demands of the new GCSE by offering rich tasks and mini-projects, and the “Teaching Notes” sections provide fantastic historical background on the subjects being studied, as well as highlighting key language and misconceptions.
