What is it?
This is a collection of really well designed problems that are designed for Key Stage 2 students, but which I fully intend on using with my Year 7s, 9s and even 11s. Each problem is presented beautifully on a single PowerPoint slide, a pdf and a jpeg. Even better – and this always goes down well with me! – the answers are also provided. The problems are all high quality and lend themselves well to further discussion and exploration.
How can it be used?
There are lots of ways to use top quality problems like these. As the author suggestions, they make excellent starters, plenaries and homework. They also lend themselves well to extension work for students who have finished. One problem could also be stuck up on the Maths Notice board each week to encourage whole school discussion amongst students. But my favourite use is as a “Question of the Week”. We do this with our Year 7 and 8 students, who are each given the same rich problem each week. As a maths department we look at each problem first and think of ways we can offer support and also provide extra extension for our students. We then run the problems with our classes. This set of mini investigations would be ideal for such a feature, and we will certainly be adding them to our bundle!
