Much to my wife’s dismay, I spent most of my Easter holidays building up my GCSE Maths Takeaway page. I wanted a single page where my Year 11 students could go to do some independent revision, or to source questions on topics they are struggling on to bring to intervention/revision lessons.
GCSE Maths Takeaway is finally complete, and can be found on this page.
Here is an overview of the contents:
1. GCSE Maths Takeaway
These collection of 111 topic specific exam questions have been around on the internet for a couple of years now, and my students have always found them incredibly useful. Not only do they group all the exam questions on one particular topic in one place, but the questions are often in increasing order of difficulty, thus showing students the full range of skills they require. They are also relevant whichever exam board you are studying.
2. Videos
A massive thanks to MathedUp here for a link to an excellent video for each of the takeaway topics. These videos are provided by the likes of HegartyMaths, so you really are getting topic quality guides presented in ways students can really understand.
3. GCSE Maths Takeaway Answers
The source of the majority of these lovely hand-written solutions is unknown. I have filled in a few of the gaps myself (the scruffy ones!), but if you know who did the others please let me know and I will give them a well deserved shout-out!
4. Diagnostic Question Quizzes
For each of the GCSE Maths Takeaways, I have created a 5 question Diagnostic Questions quiz. The idea here is that students can test their powers of explanation, identify any lingering misconceptions, and benefit from resolving these misconceptions by reading explanations given from students from all around the world. Students can work their way through these at their own pace, or you can set them as quizzes and monitor their progress. See my How To… videos for information on setting up your students (completely for free) on Diagnostic Questions.
5. Mathster Quizzes
Mathster is a wonderful product for creating online and paper based homeworks and assessments (read this lovely review for more information about its uses). I have kindly been given permission to create a free online assessment for each of the Maths Takeaway topics. The beauty of these are they are self marking, and the questions are generated randomly, meaning students can get as much practise with as many different examples as they need.
And here is the advice I give to my students on how to make the most out of the resources:
1. Choose a topic you think you need to practice
2. Print out the worksheet of exam questions and try as many of the questions as you can
3. If you are struggling, watch the video
4. Now return to the worksheet to see if you can fill in some more gaps
5. When you have done all you can, look at the answers and mark your work
6. Then try the Diagnostic Questions Quiz on the topic, trying to explain each answer
7. When you have finished the Quiz, click Review Answers and read through other students’ explanations for any questions you got wrong until you find one that makes sense to you.
8. And for a final test, try a Mathster online assessment. It’ll mark it for you, and if you refresh the page you get a whole new set of questions.
9. Repeat this cycle as many times as you need until you are happy with the topic
The rest of my GCSE Maths revision materials can be found on this page.
I hope you and your students find them useful. Happy revising! 🙂
