Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Mr Barton Maths Podcast, with me Craig Barton.
This time around I was delighted to speak to Christian Bokhove.
Christian is an Associate Professor of Maths Education at the University of Southampton. He has particular interests in technology and maths education, PISA and TIMSS, skills and understanding, debunking myths of myths, methodology, Social Network Analysis, and many more things I don’t really understand. Christian is also a keen user of Twitter, and I often find his thoughts a useful reminder not to get carried away with a particular research finding.
In this conversation we discussed the following things, and plenty more besides:
- Aspects of Christian’s research that particularly interest him, including the wordiness of maths tasks and the importance of a shared curriculum, instructional time and PISA/TIMSSs data.
- Christian’s views on popular research topics such as Cognitive Load Theory
- And then textbooks: why does Christian think England is missing a trick?
This episode is a cracker in its own right, but it also serves as the perfect introduction to the next series of Research in Action episodes, where I speak to researchers from Loughborough University, which will be visiting your ears very soon.
If you need to, you can download an mp3 version of the podcast here (but most podcast providers give you the option to download for offline listening)
On Twitter, Christian is @cbokhove

Hi Craig
Been having real trouble getting the podcasts to play on anything recently. Used to love the download feature so I could listen on the way to work, but that doesn’t seem to be an option anymore. Also when trying to use the google podcast app, it just says oops something went wrong and it only has the last 6 episodes on, which is frustrating. Lastly tried playing it directly from the website but that doesn’t work either.
Any ideas of how I could access these would be great.
Many thanks for all that you do
Luke
