Spotting the patterns and relationships between numbers is one of mathematics greatest pleasures, and I have found that even the most mathematically reluctant student cannot avoid being seduced by their charms.

This wonderful resource challenges students to identify the patterns that exist in a 1-100 number grid. The numbers have been shaded, and it is up to the students to describe the relationship between them. The shading not only focuses the students’ attention on the numbers, but on the patterns themselves, making this a great activity for promoting thinking skills and discussions. And when they have done, why not challenge them to create some shaded patterns of their own?
