Students not being able to work their calculators properly is a common problem that can have potentially disastrous results when then come to take an assessment. The problem isn’t helped, of course, but the number of students who routinely forget their calculator in lessons, borrowing one off me or a fellow classmate, only to turn up to the exam proudly displaying and brand new, shiny calculator that they of course do not have a clue how to use.
Skills such as being able to enter fractions and powers correctly are absolutely fundamental, but they can be rather dull to teach and reinforce. Thankfully, with Calculator Story, we have a solution. Here is an engaging story where students must correctly type in a series of pretty tricky calculations in order to make sense of what is going on.
My Year 7s adored this, and it even led to a really interesting discussion as to exactly what the funny “!” symbol did.
