Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Mr Barton Maths Podcast, with me Craig Barton.

This is an episode from the Research in Action mini series, where I interview a researcher from the Mathematics Education Centre at Loughborough University about their chosen area of interest, and the implications for maths teaching and learning.

On today’s episode I was lucky enough to speak to Matthew Inglis.

Matthew completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Warwick. Following a period as a Research Fellow at the Learning Sciences Research Institute in Nottingham, Matthew took up a lectureship in Loughborough in 2008.

In this conversation we discussed:

  • How do you conduct educational research?
  • What about effect sizes on the EEF reports?
  • How should teachers engage with research

As someone who has arrived relatively late in my career to the world of educational research, and then subsequently became obsessed with it, this proved an incredibly important conversation to help me become aware of the challenges and limitations of educational research. It is one of my all-time favourite conversations.
